Now approaching our 25th anniversary, Roberta and I live in Medina, Ohio, which is one county south of Cleveland and one county west of Akron. Medina is the epicenter of the commercial beekeeping industry and the real-world prototype for the fictional universe of Funky Winkerbean. In the 1850s, it was a major junction point on the Underground Railroad, which is a point of civic pride to this day.
I’ve been with Brennan, Manna & Diamond in Akron since 2003. I’m in the estate planning practice group, and also serve as commissioner of the office fantasy football league. After being a stay-at-home mom for a long time, Roberta went back into the workforce last year at the office of a local psychologist. The two of us report directly to the head of the household, Cookie the Dog (pictured above), who seized power in a coup d’etat in 2005 and rules over us with an iron paw. Cookie also provided the pen name under which I moonlight as a wannabee automotive journalist for Amazon’s “Car Lust” weblog.
Our two most important accomplishments are P.J. and Alex. Originally referred to as “the Little Guys” for obvious reasons, …
… they steadily increased in size and are now fully grown. P.J. is a computer and electrical engineering major at the University of Akron and spent last summer in Arizona developing software for self-driving automobiles.
Neither of them wants to be a lawyer, get a law degree, or so much as get any closer than a hundred yards to a law school building if he can possibly avoid it. We must have done something right in raising them.
My other big news: nearly six years ago, I made contact with my birth family and picked up three more sisters to add to the one I grew up with.
Before meeting them, I thought I understood the whole nature-vs-nurture, heredity-vs-environment thing. Turns out I didn’t have a clue.
